Abstract
A new two-phase linear regression method is defined for estimating the level of use and market area of a proposed large ski resort. This method is a systems analysis approach based upon data from a “ski system”. The system studied in this paper included all of California's counties as the origins of users and 36 of the largest of California's ski resorts as the destinations. The study shows the results of treating each of these large resorts as a proposed or “simulated” resort. Predictions are made for level of use and market area and these compared with observed use to gauge the accuracy of this method.
