PERIODIC ACCREDITING OF HOUSEHOLDS

Abstract
About twenty years ago, American veterinarians adopted the policy of using the tuberculin test as a means for detecting previously unrecognized potential and active disseminators of bovine tubercle bacilli and of slaughtering all contaminated cattle to protect the uninfected members of herds. In response to repeated general applications of these rigorous prophylactic measures, the former widespread menace of bovine tuberculosis has practically disappeared from the United States. This outstanding demonstration of the control of communicable disease suggests the possibility of effectively and promptly controlling the human source of contagion by intensively applying comparable prophylactic measures suitable for preventing infection in man by contact. The magnitude of this problem is such that its ultimate solution will doubtless require the concerted efforts of the large number of physicians engaged in private practice. An ideal and complete method for attaining this objective probably should include: (1) the routine application of the Mantoux test
