Abstract
This essay is intended as a tribute to Dr John Greer, who retired in 1993 from a Readership in Education at the University of Ulster, Coleraine and died in August 1996. Its aim is to provide a straightforward account of the process and results of recent educational reform in Northern Ireland with regard to Religious Education. Discussion focuses on the joint production by the four main churches of a Core ('Agreed') Syllabus, and the Government's decision to accord it statutory status. Reactions to the Core Syllabus are recorded and a number of critical points are made. Keywords
