Abstract
The sediments of crater lakes in the Azores were studied as a basis for the sampling of material for pollen analysis. Particulars are presented in the chapter Special information, etc. Great irregularities in the chronology of the sedimentation are shown by radiocarbon dating of the bottommost organic layer possible to reach with the corer (St 2109, 2114, 2117, 2118). Local volcanic eruptions have from time to time broken the steady sedimentation of organic debris, which excludes the possibility of getting a long record of Pleistocene history. Radiocarbon dates of two buried juniper stems shed more light on the history of the volcanism of the western Säo Miguel. The microfossil content of the sediments has not yet been studied. Keywords
