Modified Dissection Technique for Diagnosis of Tracheal Mites (Acari: Tarsonemidae) in Honey Bees (Hymenoptera: Apidae)

Abstract
A technique is described for rapid dissection of adult honey bees, Apis mellifera L., to facilitate diagnosis of honey bee tracheal mites, Acarapis woodi Rennie, in the large tracheae connected to the first pair of thoracic spiracles. After dissection, tracheae are visible along their entire length. Light infestations or single-mite infestations near the spiracular opening are detectable. A dissecting microscope (25–50×), an adequate light source, and simple dissection tools are required.
