Evaluation of a New Sequential Contraceptive Agent

Abstract
One hundred ninety five patients, utilizing a sequential contraceptive agent (mestranol and mestranol with chlormadinone acetate), are studied with standardized technics. The mode of action and physiological basis of sequential treatment is discussed. Observations of cycle length, withdrawal interval, duration and amount of withdrawal bleeding, dysmenorrhea, and acyclic bleeding is recorded. Laboratory testing for safety and performance is reported. Patient follow-up after discontinuing the drug is summarized regarding subsequent pregnancies and establishment of normal cycles. Other uses besides fertility control are discussed. Mestranol and mestranol with chlormadinone acetate given sequentially for fertility control is safe, effective, and well tolerated.
