The critical field for the nucleation of n‐domains in type I superconductors

Abstract
In type I superconductors of ellipsoidal shape and large demagnetization factors the maximum diamagnetic magnetization in general is larger than the value (‐)HC/4π. Furthermore the magnetic field where the intermediate state starts is shifted to higher values. These deviations from the macroscopic theory may be attributed to the effect of the s‐n‐wall energy as well as to the interaction energy of domain walls with lattice imperfections. An investigation is made of the combined effect of these two energy contributions on the mag‐netization curve of type I superconductors.
