Demethylchlortetracycline-Induced Fluorescence of Gastric Sediment

Abstract
The demonstration of fluorescent material in gastric sediment after the oral administration of demethylchlortetracycline (Declomycin) may serve to differentiate malignant from benign gastric lesions. In a study of 58 patients with a variety of benign and malignant disorders of the stomach, all 10 patients with cancer and 2 patients with a benign gastric ulcer showing mucosal atypism gave a positive test. Of the 46 patients with normal stomachs or clearly benign disorders, only 1 gave a positive test. The test for induced fluorescence of gastric sediment is simple to perform, but certain technical aspects must be observed to insure an accurate result.
