Abstract
This paper addresses the task of joint symbol-by-symbol decisions and maximum likelihood (ML) channel estimation using the PSP concept. Based on two popular algorithms, which have an inherent trellis structure two adaptive derivatives are proposed, namely per-survivor processing-optimum soft output algorithm (PSP-OSA) and PSP-SSA (sub-optimum soft output algorithm). The new algorithm (PSP-SSA) has a simplified form with complexity compared to PSP-MLSE. Simulation results show a significant improvement of the simpler PSP-SSA algorithm over the conventional structure, which consists of a hard-decision channel equalizer followed by a convolutional decoder. Keywords
