Abstract
We study classical statistical mechanics of one-dimensional kink-bearing scalar fields at low temperatures by means of the transfer integral method. Finite-temperature corrections to kink free energies and correlation lengths are analytically obtained by the use of the Green's function method and the “modified WKB method”. These corrections reveal that the kink excitations cause the Schottky-type anomaly of specific heats in the φ4 and sine-Gordon chains, and that kink-kink interactions mediated by thermally excited phonons are important in the double-quadratic chain.
