Abstract
A large collection of dried samples of strains of N. meningitidis (accumulated since 1928) including strains of N. flavescnes and other neisseriae was screened by reconstituting the cultures and observing morphological, cultural, physiological and serological characteristics. Attention was paid to similarities and differences of meningococcal groups A, B, C and D. Serologically, group A is relatively homogeneous; group B is relatively complex; group C is moderately homogeneous. There is some evidence for the occurrence of "types" within all groups. A "type strain" or "neotype" for each group is suggested. Samples of strains have been deposited with the American Type Culture Collection.
