Abstract
Study of the stages of the emergence of the American cultural bugbear within the Socialist Parly sheds light on how the party's internal and external struggles made culture a major theme of the 1981 election campaign and of the first months of the new government. The vitalist philosophy which underpinned this condemnation of cultural imperialism dissolved the oppositions which defined the normative framework of the cultural policies valid until 1982-1983. The history of this framework since ils appearance under André Malraux explains the success and the impact of the Langian cultural vitalism by the timing of its public diffusion. Keywords
