Abstract
The Bartnik-McKinnon and Bizon soliton solutions to the Einstein-Yang-Mills equations have recently been linked to topology change. We confirm that they are saddle points of the Euclidean action and calculate their topological charges. The black hole case requires new contributions to the topological current density which may be useful for other situations where there is a bounded region of space. Keywords
