Abstract
A strain of B. cereus makes good growth but negligible sporulation on a glutamate-salts medium. Addition of 0.1 to 0.2% glucose induces 70-90% sporulation, with a small increment in growth. Addition of 2-4 mg./ml. of DL-alanine to the glucose-glutamic medium inhibits sporulation without affecting growth. Small amts. of complex naturally occurring materials contain a substance or substances that will reverse the alanine inhibition and restore high sporulation. Leucine and isoleucine have a low activity in this regard. Features of sporulation as mechanism involving a sequence of biochemical reactions in a balanced system of enzymes are discussed. Keywords
