Abstract
An enyme system, UDP-galactose-4-epimerase, is described which is derived from a mutant strain of S. typhimurium and appears to be involved in the biosynthesis of the cell-wall lipopolysaccharide. The enzyme system was stimulated by Mg++and Mn++ions, and inhibited by relatively high levels of uracil nucleotides. It is suspected that the product of the UDP-galactose trans-ferase contains galactose bound to the glucose-heptose-phosphate poly-saccharide.Keywords
