Abstract
Intraoperative blood salvage can reduce the need for homologous red blood cell transfusions in cases in which 1,000 mL or more of blood loss is expected. A carefully trained team with adequate leadership is critical to the procedure's success. An effective program displays coordination and communication among the team, surgeons, anesthesiologists, blood bank physicians, and the hospital’s transfusion committee. Periodic monitoring of the hematocrit level, free hemoglobin level, anticoagulant level, and sterility of salvage blood is important. This is the first article in a four-part continuing update series on blood banking. Other articles focus on blood substitutes, electronic crossmatch, and transfusion triggers. Keywords
