Dielectric loss mechanisms in the paraelectric region for ceramic barium titanate

Abstract
The Curie-Weiss-like behaviour of the loss tangent of ceramic barium titanate is shown to depend on the surface area of the grains and is explained in terms of interaction of the soft-mode at the grain boundaries. A relation tan δ = 0.004 D −1 (T - T 0)−1 is obtained for the region just above T c with D, the mean grain diameter, in cm and T in kelvins. The region over which this effect is dominant is limited by conduction loss introduced when oxygen is lost during specimen preparation.
