Eutrophication is the main danger threatening European subalpine lakes, particularly the small ones. Among salmonids, char seems already to have suffered severely from organic pollution, and may fare even less well in future, though forecasts are less pessimistic for trout and coregonines. Building of industries and power plants, tampering with shores, shipping, and hydrologic and hydrographic changes must be opposed if these bodies of water are to be preserved in ecologically healthy states. The future of fisheries largely depends on commercial and socio-economic factors.
