School Dropout or College Bound: Study in Contrast

Abstract
Records of fifty high school dropouts and fifty graduates admitted to college were compared retrospectively to determine at what point the two groups became significantly different. Most differences in academic performance, behavior ratings, absenteeism, and IQ were already significantly different in first grade and became increasingly more disparate through time. Number of residential changes, school transfers, and particular school attended were also explored and differences found. More males dropped out and more females went on to college, but college-bound males had higher IQ’s than college-bound females with the opposite IQ-sex relationship true for the dropout group. The decision for dropping out seems to be complexly determined with beginnings early in the school career.
