The Effect of Radiations on Replication in Brachiomonas submarina Bohlin

Abstract
The alga was grown under continuous illumination, so that population growth was exponential, or with alternating light and dark periods, so that formation and release of new daughter cells was confined to a brief interval beginning about 6 hours after the start of the dark period. Exposure to 6 kR of X-rays reduced colony-forming ability by about 90% but did not affect population growth for at least 30 hours. Exposure to 925 ergs/mm2 of germicidal UV reduced colony-forming ability by about 50% and caused an immediate but temporary suppression of population growth in exponentially-growing cultures. In cultures maintained under cycled illumination, UV irradiation virtually eliminated the next population increase unless irradiation was performed less than 2 hours before the release of new cells.
