Automating the Identification of Cartographic Lines

Abstract
One difficulty in automating line generalization is the assignment of tolerance values. I argue here that tolerance values selected for one type of geomorphic feature may produce inappropriate generalizations of other types requiring preservation of different types of graphic detail. To automate the assignment of tolerance values, the type of feature must be identified. The paper demonstrates hierarchical measurements of geometry that implicitly accommodate the scale-dependent nature of cartographic detail, and proposes a digital method for identification of feature types based upon these measurements.
