Antimicrobial and Antiviral Activities of Some Marine Algae from Eastern Sicily

Abstract
Lipid extracts of 13 algae from Eastern Sicily were tested for antimicrobial activity against Bacillus subtilis and Phoma tracheiphila, and for antiviral activity against tobacco mosaic virus. Zanardinia prototypus and Cystoseira balearica exhibited the best antimicrobial and antiviral activity among the species tested, while Lophocladia lallemandii, inactive against the bacterium, had high inhibitory effect against the virus. Enrichment of the antibacterial activity of Laurencia obtusa during fractionation process was obtained.
