Abstract
A review of the physiol. and pathological role of K in medicine and of its use as a therapeutic agent is presented. Two post-operative patients are described who presented the chemical pattern of unexplained high serum bicarbonate and low serum chlorides. The serum K was low. Cessation of parenteral NaCl therapy and the institution of KC1 instead, caused the blood chemistries to revert to normal within 10 days with coincident clinical improvement. Balance data for one patient showed marked retention of K. Oral and intraven. methods of admn. of K are descr. Keywords
