‘Normalized’ Family Resources for Families with a Developmentally Disabled Child

Abstract
Families involved with the extraordinary caretaking demands of a developmentally delayed child are at risk for added stress, social isolation, and reduced feelings of autonomy. Interventions with these families must address total needs. Stress-coping theories relevant to these families are reviewed, and specific social work roles are recommended for maintaining and developing “normalized”family resources—that is, resources for helping these families to live in as normal a way as possible.
