Abstract
Chemicals were screened in the laboratory in 2 stages to evaluate their potential for control of terrestrial molluscs. In the first stage where slugs in cages were pro-vided with discs of carrot, which had been soaked in solutions of the candidate molluscicides, 23 of the 74 materials tested were highly molluscicidal. In the second stage slugs were caged on trays of growing peas, which had been sprayed with the 23 best materials from Stage 1. However, only Mesurol® (4-(methylthio)-3,5-xylyl methylcarbamate), metaldehyde, UC 30045 (methyl 2-isopropyl-4-(methylcarbamoyloxy) carbanilate), and Her. cules 18526 (O, O-dimthyl phosphorothioate S-ester with 3-(mercaptomethyl). l.methyl hydantoin) were effectively molluscicidal when applied as spray formulations in Stage 2. Four materials in granular, formulation were tested as broadcast applications in Stage 2. Of these materials Temik® (10% granular f01mulation of aldicarb) and 10% granular phorate achieved spectacular results and were the most encouraging pointers to effective field application for slug control, in the screening program.
