Abstract
Smaller-than-normal RBCs (microcytosis) are commonly detected as a by-product of RBC counts measured by electronic particle counters. Their presence provides a clue to the existence of iron deficiency, thalassemia, and other less common disorders. The differential diagnosis of microcytosis is discussed, an approach to its evaluation is outlined, and illustrative cases that typify several causes of microcytosis are presented.
