Abstract
Using internationally accepted strict clinical criteria, 81 patients with clinically definite MS, 14 patients with neuromyelitis optica and 80 patients with possible MS from the Bombay region have been described. The study extends from 1957 to 1980 and includes the cases reported in 1975.The present series confirms that in Indian MS patients, the incidence of optic nerve involvement and clear cut sensory level was higher but the incidence of cerebellar involvement was less as compared to the West. These features conform to the pattern described from Japan and other Asian Centres. In this series, classical MS was more common in higher socio-economic group. In the low socio-economic group the incidence of neuromyelitis optica was higher. Besides, in MS patients in this group, bilateral optic nerve involvement was more frequent and the incidence of cerebellar involvement was less. There was no significant positive correlation with HLA-A3 or HLA-B7 antigens in MS patients in the two series reported from the Bombay region. A striking increase in HLA-B12 in one report was not confirmed in the other report.
