Abstract
The previous development of the theory of rotational excitation in collisions of diatomic molecules is transformed to obtain equations for a set of generalized phase shifts. The resulting equations are in a form which may be interpreted in terms of trajectories and interference effects. Approximate equations valid in the semiclassical limit are obtained. A further approximation leads to the previously developed sudden approximation. Keywords
