Abstract
The object of this paper is to study the influence of the characteristics of the excitation pulse on resonant multiphoton ionization. A classical description of the field is introduced in the exactly solvable model initially developed by Beers and Armstrong. A detailed solution is given for square pulses. The case corresponding to a highly excited resonant level is particularly studied both analytically for square pulses and numerically for different amplitude-varying shapes. Keywords
