Abstract
The design and evaluation of a hen marker and semen collector are reported. These devices were used for the direct measurement of the mating activity of chickens under natural flocking conditions. Significant product moment correlations were found between flock fertility and number of markings per female (0.60), and between flock fertility and percentage of females marked (0.64). Semen volume of matings from which semen was recovered ranged from less than 0.01 ml to 1.00 ml, with a median volume of 0.02 ml. It was found that 18.3% of what appeared to be completed matings yielded no semen. Keywords
