Abstract
Washed cells of Azotobacter agile suspended in phosphate buffer lose the ability to oxidize succinic acid and glucose and lose the capacity to adapt to the oxidation of succinic acid. The rate at which respiratory ability is lost in phosphate buffer is substantially diminished by MgSO4. Disruption by sound waves of bacteria previously incubated for short periods of time in the presence and absence of Mg ion, yields suspensions which are equally capable of oxidizing succinic acid, while cells incubated for long periods of time under these conditions, when disrupted, yield suspensions differing considerably in oxidative activity. Keywords
