Abstract
RENAL DISEASE is responsible for significant morbidity and mortality among Americans with diabetes mellitus, and treatment costs alone result in an estimated annual expenditure of more than $2 billion.1 In fact, approximately 40% of all new cases of end-stage renal disease (ESRD) in the United States are due to diabetes, making it the leading cause of ESRD.2 Furthermore, the prevalence of ESRD among persons with diabetes has been increasing by approximately 16% annually since 1987, a rate surpassing any other cause of ESRD.2This publication has 19 references indexed in Scilit:
