Sources of behavioral consistency.

Abstract
Previous work has led to suggestions that there are subpopulations of people who show traitlike consistency in their behavior. The present study, employing 90 undergraduates, provided (a) a conceptual replication of 2 studies (D. J. Bem and A. Allen, see PA, Vol 53:4252; and M. F. Scheier et al, see PA, Vol 62:11064) that used different techniques to identify the consistent subpopulation and (b) evidence that these are 2 distinct subpopulations. Ss were administered the Self-Description Survey and Self-Consciousness Inventory and were rated on their observed social behavior in an experimental situation. Findings suggest that some people whose behavior is less predictable maintain an illusion of the consistency of their own behavior, as indicated by the high predictability of self-ratings of behavior for those people.
