Effect of Specific Antibody on the Metabolism of Serratia marcescens

Abstract
Rabbits were immunized with live S. marcescens to obtain antisera of high titer. The gamma globulin fraction was obtained by ethanol precipitation. When young cultures of S. marcescens were grown in contact with specific antibody and normal serum or globulin there was a difference in oxygen consumption measured manometrically. The flasks containing antibody exhibited as much as a 4-fold increase in oxygen uptake. The phenomenon is tentatively ascribed to an increase in growth.
