Resistance in Wild Helianthus to the Sunflower Beetle12

Abstract
In laboratory feeding trials, all larvae of Zygogramma exclamationis (F.) died after feeding on Helianthus ciliaris DC. and H. salicifolius Dietr. Also, significantly more larvae died after feeding on wild H. annuus L., H. paradoxus Heiser, H. petiolaris Nuttall, and H. tuberosus L. than after feeding on ‘Hybrid 896.’ The total developmental period for Z. exclamationis reared on H. annuus and H. petiolaris was significantly longer than the period for larvae reared on other wild annual sunflowers. Consumption of leaf area by larvae reared on H. petiolaris, H. tuberosus, and H. paradoxus was significantly below that of larvae reared on Hybrid 896. Females feeding on the wild species of Helianthus did not lay eggs.
