Shear Deformation Mode of Reinforced Concrete Beam

Abstract
The two‐dimensional strain distribution of a member can be decomposed into a series of orthogonal strain‐mode tensors representing simple geometrical deformation modes. Expansion coefficients of the series are obtained by integrating the product of the strain tensor and the mode tensor over the member. Deflection of the member can also be decomposed into the sum of the contributions of the deformation modes. The method was applied to the test results of a reinforced concrete beam with a web opening. For this beam, the two‐dimensional strain distribution was measured by a contact gage network. The beam failed in shear. The observed deformation pattern agreed well with that given by the prevailing plastic theory after the shear strength was approximately reached.
