Abstract
In Balanus balanoides a sudden change of salinity over range 30%o down to 18%o had no effect on vigor of nauplii. Below the lower salinity, survival was dependent upon duration of immersion. Nauplii were killed in 2 min. in fresh water, in 1 hr. in 3%0, and in 14 hrs. in 6%o salinity. After 48 hr. in 12%0 only 12% survived, but in 15%0 salinity 73% recovered after 48 hr. immersion. Limit for complete recovery of B. crenatus was 15%o and of B. balanus 21-24%o. Known distr. of 3 spp. appears to be detd. by tolerance of their nauplii to low salinities.
