Abstract
A laser-induced orientation of the directions in a thin film of nematic liquid crystal subject to a low-frequency ac electric field has been observed. This phenomenon occurs at applied voltages just below the threhold voltage for Williams domain formation in the absence of the laser beam, and it manifests itself in the form of a very slow transient rise time for the appearance of the far-field diffraction pattern. Keywords
