Abstract
0.1% thiouracil was added to the diet of a litter of puppies and 4 adult dogs. None of the dogs showed any outward manifestation of hypothyroidism, and the rate of growth of the puppies was unaffected. The thyroids were considerably enlarged, hyperplasia very marked but loss of colloid only slight. The number and degree of granulation of the basophile cells of the anterior lobe of the pituitary was increased but the acidiophile cells were unaffected. Total serum cholesterol rose to a max. after several mos. on diet and then fell to values considerably higher than those of the control animals. Total and thyroxine iodine contents of the thyroid and total liver iodine were considerably reduced. The metabolic rate was not significantly affected. Keywords
