Abstract
The shear modulus of two-dimensional Wigner crystals is calculated as an expansion about the classical zero-temperature limit. Results are obtained for the classical system at low temperatures in agreement with numerical simulations of Morf, and for a quantum-mechanical system in the limit of a large perpendicular magnetic field. Implications of the results on the possibility of observing Wigner crystallization in electron inversion layers are briefly discussed. Keywords
