Abstract
One of the most fundamental characteristics of a material is whether it is metallic or insulating. But in 1983 Rob de Groot and co-workers, then at the University of Nijmegen in the Netherlands, predicted that a material could be a "half-metal", where some of the electrons have metallic properties and some have insulating properties. Now, after over a decade of searching, Jae-Hoon Park and collaborators at the Brookhaven National Laboratory and the University of Maryland in the US have produced clear evidence for the existence of such materials (Nature 1998 398794).
