Abstract
Gaussian beam solutions of Maxwell’s equations are constructed in terms of the solutions of the paraxial scalar wave equation. Explicit expressions for the field components of Hermite-Gaussian laser beams are given and their polarization and propagation characteristics are discussed. Experimental evidence for the polarization structure of Hermite-Gaussian laser beams is presented. Keywords
