An Experimental Study of the Action of Sodium Iodide on Excised and Intact Ureters of Dogs

Abstract
Twelve per cent solutions of Nal have a distinct effect on the isolated ureter of the dog due to the hyper-tonicity and to the iodide per se. The usual reaction was a marked increase of tonus frequently progressing to complete spasm, either regional or including the entire ureter; but, exceptionally, marked relaxation occurred. These effects readily simulate observed changes in the pyelo-uterogram in man. Clinical interpretation of the human pyelo-ureterogram should include, in addition to normal anatomical constrictions or dilations and physical changes due to injection pressure, a differentiation of the functional response of the ureter to the opaque medium from that due to an organic lesion.
