This paper attempts to put in proper perspective the long-known but often overlooked phytophagous nature of many Carabidae (Coleoptera). More than 150 species are known to use vegetable matter as food in varying ABSTRACT degrees, with some species using it almost exclusively. Included are laboratory and field observations on the feeding behavior of 14 species of carabids found on golf courses in New York State.
