Effect of Digitoxin on Contractility of Ventricular Muscle Strips

Abstract
Conditions under which cardiac glycosides produce a positive ino-tropic response were studied in isolated strips of turtle ventricle. Contractility was never increased unless it had previously been depressed, and then positive effects followed only certain depressants. Reduced tension caused by rapid stimulation, cold, Ca lack and K excess was not improved, but that produced by increased acidity, quinidine, N and certain enzyme poisons such as cyanide, azide, hydroxylamine and urethane usually was improved, provided spontaneous recovery in Ringer soln. had not been complete.
