Footprints

Abstract
Visual records of the plantar surface of the foot in stance can provide valuable information for diagnostic purposes but obtaining such records presents obvious difficulties. Examination of footprints helps to overcome the problem and many techniques have been devised for this purpose. These may be classified in three basic procedures: prints made on a plane surface, imprints in a malleable material and photography through glass. Periodically, new methods and materials have been introduced in the first two groups and within the past decade new techniques have evolved using the apparatus for photography through glass. A survey of methods used within the past 100 years has been undertaken to assess their convenience in practice and to compare results.
