Iron Content of Liver in Relation to Age

Abstract
Sprague-Dawley male albino rats were fed a stock diet containing 329 ppm of iron for 32 weeks. Groups of animals were killed at the beginning of the experiment and at 4-week intervals thereafter. It was found that at the beginning of the experiment the animals had low liver iron and low hemoglobin values which increased with time and then became stabilized. The increase in liver iron continued beyond the time that hemoglobin values became constant. In general the liver iron concentrations paralleled the total liver iron.
