Validity of the Personality Inventory for Children with Four-Year-Old Males and Females: A Caution

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to validate selected scales of the Personality Inventory for Children (PIC) on a sample of preschool children from a rural Headstart population. This sample was found to score significantly higher on most PIC scales than the standardization sample. Correlations among PIC scales and criterion measures were minimal with the exception of that between the Intellectual Screening Scale and IQ, which was −.74. Statistically and clinically significant results were found only for the Intellectual Screening, Adjustment, and Delinquency PIC scales. Current recommended PIC cutoff scores appear inappropriate for use with preschool children, as does scale content for the achievement and anxiety scales. It was concluded that additional research, for norms and validation, be conducted prior to further use of the PIC with preschool children.
