Abstract
The modified Poisson-Boltzmann theory is developed and applied to the electric double layer around a uniformly charged spherical colloid particle. The electrolyte is represented by the restricted primitive model and 1 : 1, 2 : 2, 1 : 2 and 2 : 1 valency salts are treated. Singlet ion and mean electrostatic potential distributions are calculated for various values of the electrolyte concentration and macroion charge and radius. Comparisons are made with the Poisson-Boltzmann equation and for the 1 : 1 and 2 : 2 salts with the HNC/MSA equation.
