A Study of Visual Orientation Mechanisms in Turtles and Guinea Pigs

Abstract
Studies of the optomotor response of Pseudemys scripta were carried out. Performance of the binocular animals was very reliable. No habituation was exhibited, nor was there any particular effect of suddenly reversing the direction of movement of the optokinetic stimulus drum. Monocular performance was deficient when movement past the open eye was in the temporal-to-nasal direction, while it was completely absent when the stripes were moved in the nasal-to-temporal direction. Each eye appears to be specialized for the detection of temporal-to-nasal movement. The guinea pig also exhibits some of these same characteristics.
